Hi all, just to get people talking, whats your favorite war films and why? I'll start with...Saving Private Ryan..why? A true depiction of the US 116th inf Reg and elements of the 2nd Rangers assault on Omaha Dog Green beach on 6th June 1944, 2nd Hamburger Hill, why? A visceral look at the futility of 10 assaults of the 101st Airborne on Hill 937 during May 1969, acted by then a bunch of mostly unknowns, it's simple but powerful, 3rd, although full of mistakes,I really like The Hurt Locker, simply because Jeremy Renner plays EOD war junkie sgt James brilliantly

Not so much films but...
Generation Kill - HBO mini-series about the US First Recon Marines on the invasion into Iraq after 9/11. It's dirty, it's gritty, it's funny as hell in places and the action is awesome. True story too. Band Of Brothers & The Pacific - Google them if you haven't seen them. Then buy the box sets. You're welcome.

Loved Band of Brothers, didnt like the Pacific as much, I felt with B o B you got to know the soldiers better, the episode in The Pacific about Moh winnerJohn Basilone was an hour of love interest with a ten min action sequence at the end, the book 'with the old breed' by Eugene Sledge is a lot more powerfull, thanks for adding your faves

When I think about war films the two that come to mind as memorable films are Tears of the sun and Beneath Hill 60, both good films and definitely worth watching if you have not seen either of them. A couple of other films worth a mention are Flags of our fathers and Letter from Iwo Jima, both directed by Clint Eastwood telling the same story from both sides, again if you have not seen these you should put them on your to watch list.

Tears Of The Sun is great but there's a small section of the film where Bruce Willis has his Aimpoint backwards and that winds me up... Great film otherwise though!

There are a few flaws in the film but if you can look past them it is pretty awesome, one that I did forget to mention is Tigerland as well :-)

Love all the classics! Got most of them on large three tier dvd shelf unit, I have a fondness for Dunkirk and Ice cold in Alex with John Mills, some are a bit dodgy like when trumpets fade and escape to Athena, but I still collected them....

Got to admit, I had a lump in my throat at the end of Lone Survivor....

Try the book. It's a slow burner but it was difficult to read without that lump in the throat appearing a lot towards the end... Jeez...

I must admit I often read the books before the films, I'm a bit of a book freek to be honest, my missus would agree on that one, I read Lone Survivor long before the film, and the way the SEALS try and break the guys during 'hell week'
